Build awareness and celebrate people's diverse lived experiences throughout the year
Building a calendar of events that celebrating diversity and inclusion that your organisation will mark in some way is an easy way to be more inclusive.
There are days and weeks celebrating all sorts of diversity! I’m not advocating that you celebrate them all with morning teas (that would be a LOT of cake), but diversity events can be recognised in a variety of interesting ways.
To encourage broad inclusion, I recommend that you pick 1-2 events from each of the common diversity categories that you'll note during the year;
cultural & religious
women & gender equity
disability & difference
caring & parenting
If you have D&I network groups in your organisation you can ask them to nominate which events they'd like the business to formally acknowledge and support.
Not every event needs to be a flash affair. Your organisation may mark a day by sending out an article, infographic or link to a helpful website, posting on the organisation’s social media channels or even profiling employees who are happy to share their diverse lived experience.
